Lido is a chain of restaurants throughout the Riga area and even one in Latvia’s hilly country with its own ski lift.
Lido restaurants are very nicely designed to look like typical wooden Latvian houses. This is great for visitors who would like to try a typical Latvian restaurant on a smaller budget.
The food at Lido is usually pretty good. It includes Latvian and Russian dishes. Food is served cafeteria style so you can see what you are ordering without having to understand Latvian or Russian. Just point. Portions are good sized and you will not leave hungry. The food is tasty and some of it is excellent. For instance, the borsch is better than my grandmother’s. The chicken shashlik, bar-b-que, is usually excellent, the pork shashlik is usually too fatty and I do not recommend it unless you do not mind fat.
There is even a very large Lido along the Daugava river with rides for the kids, a skating rink, live music and a beer hall down stairs serving very good Lido beers. Some Lido foods are also available in the local supermarkets and are consistently high quality. Lidos are great for families and are positioned that way.
For a good Latvian or Russian meal at a reasonable price in a relaxed atmosphere I highly recommend Lido.
