Gan Bei is a chain of restaurants throughout Riga based on an Asian Fusion theme. They serve sushi, Chinese, Japanese and Thai food. Every Gan Bei restaurant I have been to is clean, nicely decorated and comfortable.
The Asian food is not very authentic and the rice served is basmati rather than long grain white rice which is a negative to me. I would suggest they offer rice and noodle options. The sushi is not very creative and they make far to much use of cream cheese, but that may be due to regional tastes here in Latvia. Having said that, all the food I have had at Gan Bei has been very tasty and they are willing to make it as spicy as I wish.
Service at Gan Bei is excellent. The wait staff have all been well trained. They are polite and all speak Latvian, Russian and English at a minimum. They set the table in careful and particular manner. They even ask how your meal is which is unusual in Latvia.
Prices average around 6 Lvl for a main dish and rice, so about $12 USD. They offer a different business lunch and meal special each day for around 5 Lvl.
The only thing that bothers me at Gan Bei is the constant and loud house music playing. If you want a quiet and relaxing place to eat, this is not it.
Overall, I recommend Gan Bei if you are in the mood for Asian food.
An update about Gan Bei. I had been warned that the Gan Bei at Galleria Riga had gone downhill quite a bit over the past few months. Bad food and bad service. I tested this yesterday and found it to be, unfortunately, true. I ordered an Indian style dish with small shrimps and vegetables. I tasted it and it was horrible. I tasted it one more time and my first taste was accurate. It was really awful. So I told the waitress that the meal was unacceptable and that I would like something else. She told me that the chef had told her that the meal was just fine and that I needed to pay for the meal and for the new dish if I ordered it. I declined to order anything additional and did not pay for the bad dish either. I paid for my soup and tea and left. I still like most Gan Bei restaurants. But I would highly recommend staying away from the Galleria Riga store. I suspect it is a management problem but that knowledge does not help unless the owners do something about it.
