The Honkonga Chinese restaurant is a surprise treat in Riga. The decor is simple and clean with some Chinese decorations. I had passed by this restaurant many times but was not inspired by the outside to come in. I figured that it would be just another mediocre to bad Chinese restaurant like most in Riga. But, always up for a culinary adventure, I had lunch there with 3 colleagues.
The prices are average for Chinese food in Riga. Most entrees are between 8-9 Euros. I had chicken in garlic sauce, egg fried rice, a hot beef dish on a sizzling platter and some vegetables cooked with black pepper along with some spring rolls. Everything was very tasty, well prepared and delicious. Not one disappointment. The vegetables with black pepper were something very special and I will most certainly return there again for that and ask them to make it for me with chicken.
The portions were very large. Enough for 2-3 people. So if you are going to go there it is best to order 1 entree for 2 people. Or you can have them pack up the left overs and take them home for another 1 or 2 meals. 4 people could not finish the meals we ordered.
There is no lunch menu or business lunch menu and no combination plates. I recommended to the owner that they add this.
I would highly recommend trying the Honkonga restaurant. Do not be put off by the simple decor. The food is very nice and you will be happy you tried it. They also have take away if you want to eat at your office or home.
